In 2008 his BIFA nominated improvised debut feature film, Extraordinary Rendition premiered in competition at the Edinburgh and Locarno International Film Festivals. Working with film in the abstract provoked a return to painting in 2009. He completed his MA in 2010, and has recently been awarded his doctorate in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art, London. After successful shows in London and Singapore, Jim’s work is now held in numerous collections both in the UK and abroad.

His paintings are artifacts, the unreliable memories of the search for the tipping point where figuration collapses into gesture. Material improvisation allows him to negotiate the push and pull of control and accident, familiarity and estrangement, representation and abstraction. The disrupted, glitching quality of form is derived from the painfully slow process of painting fastness. Painting into found vintage photographs, Jim sublimates nostalgia for the figure and bygone analogue years through a ‘digital’ painting process. The painter’s fingers smear and drag image towards the unsayable. This sabotage returns the mass reproduced photo image to the status of authentic prototype through the materiality of gesture and the kinetic potential of oil paint.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row height="auto" width="full" el_id="artwork"][vc_column][vc_column_text]ARTWORK
